Wimbledon Seedings 2011

Wimbledon 2011The build up for Wimbledon 2011 continues today with the announcement of the 2011 men’s singles seeds. Unlike every other event on the ATP calender Wimbledon does not seed the competitors strictly on the current world rankings. Though this years seedings does see world number one Rafael Nadal take the 1st seed position.

The Wimbledon seeding system is based on a simple formula taking into account players performaces on grass over the last 24 moths as well as their current world ranking.  The formula is as follows

  • Take the current world ranking points
  • Add 100% points earned for all grass court tournaments in the past 12 months
  • Add 75% points earned for best grass court tournaments in the 12 months before that

This seeding system means that some players can make significant gains and others lose out. This year Andy Roddick is major gainer as he moves up two positions to be seeded 8. By breaking into the top 8 seeds it means he will not face any of the top 8 in the world until the quarter final stage. Roddick’s gain is Gael Monfils’s loss as the world number 8 is now seeded 9th, which means he could beat any of the top 8 in the 4th round.

Other players have made gains Michael Llodra and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez both jump 6 places, Janko Tipsarevic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga jump 7 places, though it is only Tsonga who actually makes the significant gain of rising from being seeded between 17 and 32 to being seed in the top 16.
