Andy Murray stuttered the strutted his way into the second round of Wimbledon 2009.
He droped the second set on a tie break to the American Robert Kendrick after winning the first set. He managed to dig deep though to win the third set and finally showed some flair to secure the match in the fourth.
Murray ran out the winner 7-5 6-7(3-7) 6-3 6-4 in 2 hours and 37 minutes.
Murray will now face Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis in the second round probably on Thursday. Gulbis comfortably beat Italy’s Riccardo Ghedin 6-2 6-4 6-4 earlier in the day.
Murray’s performance today will not go down as one of his best, but a substantial amount of credit must be given to Robert Kendrick who produced an excelent display of aggressive tennis.
After the match Murray said,
It was a tough match, I expected it to be difficult, He served great for two-and-a-half, three sets and he made it very difficult for me. He played very aggressive and served a very high percentage of first serves, and I didn’t return as well as I would have liked, but I was happy with the way that I served throughout.
The match in 30-seconds. Murray breaks in first set only to be broken back, murray breaks again at 6-5 to win first set. Second set goes to tie-break, Murray double faults at 3-4, Kendrick win tie-breaker.
Andy Murray begins his 2009 Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday against American Robert Kendrick. The match will be 3rd on centre court (1pm start) after Venus Williams v Stefanie Voegele and Jeremy Chardy v Andy Roddick. Which should mean a start time between 4pm – 5pm.
The expectation of a British winner at Wimbledon has never been as great and that expectation will only grow over the next two weeks if Murray continues to win.
Murray’s first round opponent, American Robert Kendrick on paper should be a no contest. Kendrick is ranked 76 in the world and has only won 5 of his 14 full ATP tour matches played this year.
Murray and Kendrick have played 3 times previously, the Scot the victor in each occasion. Their last two meetings were on American hard courts, in 2006 they met in the 1st round of the US open, Murray dropped a set but won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 then in 2007 they met in Miami Murray triumphing 6-3, 6-1.
Their first meeting and only match on grass Murray demolished Kendrick 6-0 6-0 at Newport in 2006.
To give some hope to Kendrick and anti-Murray fans the American is at a 10-year career high in the rankings and two of his five victories have been against decent players Robin Soderling and Arnaud Clement
All three of their previous matches have been on the Americans home soil, it may well be time for Kendrick to return the favour.
The bookmakers don’t really see that happening though, they have Murray as clear favorite to win this first round mach and he is currently second favorite to win Wimbledon 2009.
