Wimbledon 2009 – Andy Murray v Andy Roddick

Wimbledon 2009It will be no fairy tale Wimbledon win for Andy Murray this year Gutted he has just been beaten in 4 very close sets sets 6-4 4-6 7-6 7-6.

Andy Murray wil now look to the 2009 US Open as the Scot looks to claim his first grand slam championship and end the British drought.

All credit must go to Andy Roddick, he proved all his doubters that he is indeed still one of the worlds best and looks like he surely is in the form of his life.

Andy Murray v Andy Roddick Preview

Tim Henman reached 4 Wimbledon semi finals, but was never able to take that crucial step into the final. On Friday Andy Murray will pick up were Henman left off as he takes on Andy Roddick in the Scot’s first Wimbledon semi final.

If Murray wins on Friday he will be the first British man to reach the final at Wimbledon since Henry “Bunny” Austin in 1938.

Standing in his way is Andy Roddick, 2 time Wimbledon runner up (2004 & 2005) and 2003 US Open winner.

There match will be second on centre court on Friday 3rd July after the first semi final between Roger Federer and Tommy Hass, which is scheduled to begin at 1pm.

Roddick has been at the top of the men’s game for the last 7 years, spending the majority of his time in the worlds top 5 and even some of it as the world’s number 1 tennis player. If not for Roger Federer he would have surely been a multiple grand slam winner and even multiple Wimbledon winner losing to Roger Federer in 3 grand slam finals and 3 grand slam semi-finals.

In the very recent years he’s been passed by the new generation of top players, first came Rafael Nadal, then Novak Djokovic, then Andy Murray and more recently Juan Martin Del Potro have all established themselves above Roddick in the rankings. Though this year there have been signs that American could perhaps once again break back into the very top of the game, he reached the semi finals in Australia (lost to Roger Federer) and a career best performance at the French Open (lost to Gael Monfils) and has once now for the 4th time reached the semi finals at Wimbledon.

It’s a record that Murray should perhaps fear, but the Scot holds one massive advantage over the American, a huge winning record. They have met 8 times previously with Murray the victor on 6 of those days which include all 3 victories over the last 2 years. There only meeting on Grass was another Murray victory in the third round of Wimbledon 3 years ago.

The pressure though will be on Murray, in the next two days the hype built up by the British media will be meteoric and the weight of expectation will grow even more. As yet it appears that Murray is handled it so far, but the stakes are about to be raised and only after Friday will we know if Murray has delivered. On the other hand Roddick has nothing to lose, everyone has been expecting a Murray vs Federer final and the American should be able play freely.

While Murray came through an easy quarter final match in just over an hour and half, Roddick had to endure a 5 set epic against one of the tours scrappiest competitors, which should play into Murray’s hands.

The bookmakers certainly see this as Murray’s toughest test to date – Best odds on a Murray win is 17/50 at Betfair and best odds on Roddick win is 16/5 at Sporting Bet.
