Wimbledon 2009 – Andy Murray Seeded Third

Wimbledon 2009The 2009 seedings for the men’s singles event at Wimbledon have been announced and Andy Murray has been seeded number 3, with Roger Federer number 2 and Rafael Nadal top seed.

No huge surprise considering these are their current world rankings and whilst most tournaments seed players exactly on their world ranking the week before the tournament begins Wimbledon use much more than world ranking to determine the seedings, they include the previous 24 months grass court results as an additional factor. The seeds are the top 32 players on the ATP rankings, But then rearranged based on,

  • Take ranking points at 17 June 2009
  • Add 100% points earned for all grass court tournament in the past 12 months
  • Add 75% points earned for best grass court tournament in the 12 months before that.

With 2 players in the top 32 of the world rankings already withdrawn from Wimbledon, David Nalbandian (16th) and Richard Gasquet(20th), 33rd and 34th ranked players Philipp Kohlschreiber and Albert Montanes are promoted to seeded positions.

The biggest beneficiary this year is Marat Safin who has been seeded 15th, he has received an 8 place boost from his current world ranking of 23.  being a top 16 seed means he won’t meet a top 8 player before the 4th round.

Rainer Schuettler moved up the most places, he gained 11 places from his 30th world ranked to 19th seed.

World number 35 Tommy Hass missed out on being a seed, though if he had been just 1 place higher he would have been included in the top 32 seeds and been rewarded with an even higher seeding after winning Halle last week and decent showings at past Wimbledon’s – a player that all seeds will now be hoping to avoid.
