Wimbledon 2008 Day 4 Review

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Today Andy Murray may have delivered on his expectations, but the same could not be said for many of the other seeds on a day of some major upsets.

Andy Roddick
The biggest upset on the men’s side was the departure of the two time finalist at SW19, Andy Roddick. The big serving American was beaten by an inspired Janko Tipsarevic in 4 sets 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 4-6 6-7 (4-7). Since Novak Djokovic’s departure yesterday, Tipsarevic is now the highest ranked Serb in the men’s draw and he is showing the world that there is more than Djokovic to Men’s Serbian tennis. After the match, Tipsarevic said,

This means the world to me, I’m just glad that I won and Serbia will have more representatives in the men’s singles draw

At last week’s Bootle’s event, Andy Murray narrowly beat Tipsarevic in an exhibition match played on grass. Tipsarevic will now play Dmitry Tursunov.

Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal needed work hard to overcome the challange of Latvian teenager Ernest Gulbis. At Queens two weeks ago, Gulbis narrowly lost Andy Murray in three sets in the match that Murray picked up his thumb injury. Nadal needed to come back from a set down to beat the impressive Gulbis 5-7 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 6-3, Gulbis showing signs that he will soon be a top 20 player, with a little more consistency and fitness.

The Brits
Unfortunately the only British winner today was Andy Murray. British qualifier Chris Eaton was defeated in straight sets by Dmitry Tursunov 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 6-4 in one hour 56 minutes. The big serving Brit made a good fist of things in the first set and took it to a tie breaker, but Tursunov was just on a slightly higher level than Eaton and was outplayed much of the rest of the set. In the Ladies side, defending Wimbledon champion Venus Williams was pushed hard by the British number one Anne Keothavong, but after a spirited first 11 games Keothavong eventually was overturned by Williams 7-5 6-2.

Andy Murray is now the only Brit left in either singles draws.

Other upsets
9th seeded American James Blake continued his rather poor Wimbledon record continue when he stumbeled out 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4 4-6 4-6 to German Rainer Schuettler. Blake has failed to make it past the third round In six appearances at the All England Club.

Wimbledon 2008 Day 2 Review

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Day 2 provided us whith our first look at Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick and a perhaps a new British bright hope in Chris Eaton.

Andy Murray

Andy Murray won through convincingly against French Veteran Fabrice Santoro, you can read the full story on this match here.

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal enjoyed an easy win over German qualifier Andreas Beck 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-0) in two hours 19 minutes. Nadal is bidding to become the first man since Bjorn Borg to win the French Open and Wimbledon back to back.

The world number two cruised past Beck, who was playing his first ever match on grand slam show court. The centre court experience did not seem to over-awe him, but he rarely troubled a focus Nadal.

Nadal will face the 19 year old Ernst Gulbus from Latvia – Many will remember he stretched Andy Murray to three sets in the third round at Queen’s. Gulbis beat American John Isner in his own first round match.

The Brits

Three Male Brits were in action today, Andy Murray as we know went through and he was joined in the second by Chris Eaton. The 20 year old British qualifier continued his impressive form he showed n qualifying by defeating Serbia’s Boris Pasanski 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.

Eaton fired down 26 aces to overpower the world number 114 on Court Three. Eaton who is only ranked 661st, held his serve throughout and broke Pasanski twice. Unfortunatly fellow Briton Jamie Baker whose progress this year has been held back by a rare blood disease went out in the first round, losing 6-4 6-2 6-3 to Italy’s Stefano Galvani.

The Female Brits has similar mixed results, British number one Anne Keothavong seen off Vania King to reach the second round at Wimbledon, but Katie O’Brien and Naomi Cavaday but went out, though Cavaday did give us a great performance in the first set against Venus Williams only losing on a tie break after being up a break in the set.

Upsets

Not so much of an upset, but 4th seed continued his terrible Wimbledon record by crashing out in the first round. Whe you consider he opted to play a clay court tournament rather than Halle or Queens club, we should have expected as much.

26th seed Ivan Ljubicic lost to Jurgen Meltzer in 5 tight sets and was the only other seed to fall.
