Queens Club: 2nd Round Draw – Day 3 Preview

Day 2 of the Artois Championships at Queens Club is over and all the first round matches have been completed. Not surprisingly all of the British players with exception of Scotland’s Andy Murray have been knocked out.

Wild card Josh Goodall was the first of the Brits to fall, losing to former Queens champion Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 6-4. James Ward then put on a brave debut performance, the 22-year-old from London went out in three close sets against former World No. 1 Marat Safin on the opening day. British number two Alex Bogdanovic, now coached partly by Brad Gilbert whimpered out to Australian qualifier Joseph Sirianni losing 6-3 6-3.

On day 2 two more Brits fell, another wild card Dan Evans, 18-year-old from Birmingham endured a tough ATP debut going down 6-1, 6-1 to former Wimbledon semifinalist Xavier Malisse. The last Brit to go out was Richard Bloomfield who had battled through the qualifiers to be here. He fought hard in the first set against the tenth seed Fernando Gonzalez but eventually went down 7-6(5), 6-3.

Two seeds have fallen in round 1, Fernando Lopez, seeded 14 and Sam Querrey, seeded 16 both lost yesterday.

4 players are already through to round three, one of those is sixth seed Andy Murray. The Scot’s match only lasted a few minutes as Sebastien Grosjean had to retire hurt from their second round match after only 2 games. The other 3 players through are eighth seed Ivo Karlovic, seventh seed Paul-Henri Mathieu and Mario Ancic who eliminated ninth seed Fernando Verdasco.
