Murray Wins Wimbledon Opener

Andy Murray 1st Round Win

Andy Murray reached the second round despite dropping the first set in the first full match to played under the center court roof at Wimbledon this year.

He battled past Daniel Gimeno-Traver 4-6 6-3 6-0 6-0 after heavy rain at washed out half the days play at Wimbledon today. After failing to convert a number of break point opportunities, he dropped the first set, but Murray finally broke in the second set and raced to victory with 15 games in a row.

If it was a football match, we would be saying it was a game of two halves. As it was a tennis match we need to say it was a game of 1 & half and 2 & half sets. In the first set and half, Murray and Traver both played like top 20 players with the Spaniard edging the first set as Murray played one dodgy service game.

In the second half of the 2nd set and the 3rd and 4th sets, Traver played like a club player whilst Murray stepped up to play more like the number four player in the world.

Murray will now face Slovenian Blaz Kavcic or Germany’s Tobias Kamke in round two. Their match was halted at 6-3 7-6(4) 1-5 in favour of Kamke, they are scheduled 2nd on court 6 tomorrow.

After the match Murray was interviewed by the BBC,

I didn’t think I started that badly, but he was hitting the ball very, very big, But once I got ahead, I relaxed and played very well. There were a lot of rallies and I learned a few things out there. I started making more first-serve returns and then started playing better. It is different under the roof – there are no elements to contend with, so they are good conditions to play under.
