There can be no question that Ferrer is the dominant player on clay having won all four of their previous matches on clay.

In 2011 it finished  3-1 to Murray, in fact he had won the last 4 matches before his loss at the 02. Those wins included a few important matches, Murray beat Ferrer in the semi final of 2011 Australian Open, after Ferrer had taken out Nadal in the previous round. Murray also claimed the win in the final of the Shanghai Masters in October 2011.

In 2010 it finished 2-1 to Ferrer, the two wins for David Ferrer both came in the European Clay court masters series events. Ferrer won both in straight sets.

Previous to 2010 they had not met each other since 2006 when they played twice in that year, Ferrer winning first in Barcelona on clay and Murray winning in Canada on hard courts.
