Andy Murray Retains St Petersburg Title

Andy Murray destroyed Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev 6-1 6-1 in under an hour to retain his St Petersburg Open title and continue his sensational end of season form

Murray has lost 2 matches in his last 25, those where the US Open final to Roger Federer and 1st round loss at the Olympics and his streak includes three titles now after adding St Petersburg to the two masters title already won.

The final today was for the most part was a no-contest, Murray broke serve in the fourth and sixth games of the opening set and broke three more times in the second set to seal victory over the 150th ranked Golubev.

Murray’s route to the final was little more trickier than than final itself, he beat Serbia’s Victor Troicki (ranked 51) and Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis (ranked 50th) in the opening rounds before dispatching Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic (ranked 48th) in the quarters and world number 15 Fernando Verdasco in the semi finals, all without dropping a set.

After the match Murray said,

I’m happy to win and to defend my title here…Andrey performed very well this week and, I believe, has a good chance to become a top-ranked professional.

Murray Wins Third Title in St Petersburg

Andy Murray secured his 3rd ATP title of his short career with a 6-2 6-3 win over Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the St Petersburg Open.

The 20-year-old Scot never allowed his opponent to settle, breaking in games three and seven as he took the opening set without breaking sweat and although Murray rarely produced any brilliance, he managed to break twice more to clinch victory.

It lifts him to 11th in the ATP Race and gives his chances of making the end-of-season Masters Cup in Shanghai realistic.
