Australian Open 2011 – First Round Win for Murray

Australian Open Tennis 2011Andy Murray made a decent start to his 2011 Grand Slam campaign with a simple straight sets victory over Karol Beck in the first round of the 2011 Australian Open.

Murray who slipped to 5th in the world rankings just prior to the open was leading 6-3 6-1 4-2 when Beck retired with a shoulder injury.

It was a solid display from the Scot, though he was rarely pressured by Beck. He faced just three break points in the match and no point in the match was there any consideration of anything but a Murray win.

It’s the first time Murray has played at the Oz open since losing last years final to Roger Federer. After the win, Murray spoke to the world’s media,

I started the match quite well, I got a bit tentative at the end of the first set but played a lot better from late in the second. I don’t know exactly when he hurt his shoulder but his serve definitely slowed down towards the end of the second set. Until he hurt himself I felt it was a good match. I’ve trained and prepared well, which gives you confidence. I’m not going to get ahead of myself, I’ll just focus on one match at a time as the depth of men’s draw is so strong.

Murray will next face Ukrainian Illya Marchenko in round 2.
