2016 Wimbledon Final
Andy Murray Defeats Milos Raonic (CAN)
6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2)
Andy Murray produced a near perfect performance to win his second Wimbledon title and cement his place among the all time greats. Murray out classed debut finalist Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) on centre court in front off a partisan crowd.
Murray is now a three time grand slam winner, adding to his 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon wins. Along with his 2012 Olympic Gold and last years Davis Cup win he is finally moving into being one of the all time tennis greats.
His opponent today Milos Ranoic, playing in his first grand slam final could never quite meet the heights of his semi final win over Federer. This was the first grand slam final, that Murray has not played a player ranked higher than him and his first grand slam final not featuring Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic.
Ranoic’s performance today was very reminiscent of Murray’s debut grand slam final when he lost to Roger Federer in straight sets at the US Open in 2008.
Andy Murray said Ivan Lendl was “lucky” in his post match interview, exactly what that was in reference to is unknown, but it perhaps may refer to the winning of another grand slam for Murray coming immediately upon his return. I have no doubts that without Lendl in corner today, Murray would surely have won today. Lendl will earn his Murray when Murray comes face to face with Djokovic in grand slam final.
Murray eyes will now perhaps turn to the Davis Cup, which starts on Friday, but he may pass on that given that he also has the Olympics to prepare for this year.
New Head To Head Record
Andy Murray and Milos Raonic have now met on 10 occasions and their head to head record now stands at 7-3 in Murray’s favour. Their previous match before today was on grass courts at the 2016 ATP 500 in Queens Club where Murray won 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3.
