2016 Australian Open Novak Djokovic

Andy Murray’s run as the bridesmaid of Australian Open continues just like his terrible run of results against Novak Djokovic continues. The scot lost his fifth Australian Open final 6-1, 7-5, 7-6(3).

Murray has now just won once in the last twelve meetings between the worlds top two players. Djokovic’s lead in ranking points is almost 8000 points and looks set to remain world number 1 for quite a while yet with Murray or Federer unable to beat the Serbian on the biggest stage.

Murray started slowly and lost the first set quickly, he recovered well in the second and ultimately is where the match was lost. Murray played better than Djokovic for most of the set and had opportunities to capitalise in the set, he also dug himself out dangerous situations, but when it got down to the crunch games, like so often, it was Djokovic who delivered.

The third set remained competitive, but in a similar story to the second, Djokovic’s mental edge in the crucial part of a set seen him though to victory.

Murray’s quest for another Grand Slam goes on and he will now head home to be with his wife who is about to give birth to their first child.
