2012 Monte Carlo Masters – Murray Spanks Troicki

Murray Beats TroickiAndy Murray returned to clay-court action for the first time since last years French Open in fine style. He breezes passed his second round opponent Viktor Troicki 6-0 6-3 in just over an hour of play.

The tennis produced by Murray in the first set was simply genius at times and Troicki struggle to barely register a point. I think Peter Fleming summed up the first when he said,

Victor the invoice is the post, this is a tennis lesson.

The Serb fared slightly better in the second set, though Murray still managed two breaks of serve as he wrapped up the match in 67 minutes. After the match he spoke with media,

It was a good start. Normally it has taken me a few matches to get used to the clay but today I moved well from the beginning and that’s really important for me on this surface. I haven’t had that much time on clay to work on things. I will get that in next five or six weeks before the French Open.

Murray, who is the third seed this week, due Roger Federer missing the event received a first-round bye as all the top 8 seeds do. HeĀ  will next play either Julien Benneteau or 15th seed Jurgen Melzer who meet later today. Murray holds a winning record over both players and will be favourite to reach the quarter finals.

Should Murray win the event this year, which would be his first ever clay court title, so we are not holding our breath. He would likely have to go through world number 1 Djokovic in the semi’s and SEVEN in a row Monte Carlo champion Rafael Nadal in the final. If he did that he would really deserve his his pay cheque this week.
