2011 Rogers Cup in Montreal 1st Round Draw

Montreal Masters TennisThe 2011 Rogers Cup in Montreal will be the place that Novak Djokovic debuts as the worlds number 1 tennis player. It will also see the return to action of defending Champion Andy Murray, former world number ones Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who will restart their tennis seasons after their post Wimbledon down time.

Andy Murray will be hoping to become the first player since Ivan Lendl in the late eighties to win three Canadian masters titles in a row. A feat that none of the current best players have achieved.

The top 8 seeds all have a bye into the second round, with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer drawn in the top half of the draw. World number 2 Rafael Nadal and Britain’s Andy Murray are in the opposite bottom half of the draw.

Andy Murray will start his defence of his title against either Pablo Andujar or Kevin Anderson in his first match, meanwhile Nadal will face either Ivan Dodig or Jeremy Chardy. In the top half, world number 3 Federer will meet Juan Ignacio Chela or Vasek Pospisil and Djokovic will face either Nikolay Davydenko or a qualifier in his first match as world number 1.

The draw is missing Andy Roddick, as he continues to recover from the side muscle problem that has seen miss the start of the North American hard court swing. American’s will be looking to their new number 1 Mardy Fish to provide their main hope of a victory in Canada. Fish who is the sixth seed is in the same quarter as Murray and opens against either Feliciano Lopez or┬áRadek Stepanek.

The Canadian Masters 1000 (aka the Rogers Cup) alternates between Montreal and Toronto each year. Andy Murray has been successful in both venues over the last two years, claiming his maiden Rogers Cup in Montreal in 2009.
