Rafael Nadal staked his claim as the all-time greatest player of tennis as he beat Novak Djokovic to win the US Open and complete his set of Grand Slam titles.
Nadal won his third grand slam of the year with a 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2 win against Djokovic in the final at Flushing Meadows in New York. Nadal now holds nine Grand Slam titles.
He becomes just the seventh man in history to complete the set of majors – Wimbledon, the French, Australian and US Opens. He joins Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Don Budge and Fred Perry and becomes the first man since Laver in 1969 to win the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in the same year.
After the match Nadal spoke to the world’s media,
“That’s more than I dreamt, It’s just amazing to be here in this final, just to arrive in this final. To have this trophy here in a few seconds, with my hands, is going to be unbelievable.”
