Andy Murray kicked of his grass court season with a close fought victory in the doubles at Queens Club with his first time partner Lleyton Hewitt.
The British Australian combination took on the American Duo of Andy Roddick and Rajeev Ram coming out winners 3-6 6-3 12-10.
The match was full of big serves and played at very quick pace, the match was completed in less than hour and Murray’s team had to save a match point before they were able to secure the victory. The Americans earned the first opportunity to secure the win at 9-8 in the Match Tie-break, before Hewitt and Murray countered to earn their first match point at 10-9.
Murray and Hewitt will both be happy with how they are serving, in the final set super tie break they produced a 100% record on first serves and only dropped 1 of those points.
They duo will next face Lukasz Kubot and Oliver March, who are currently No. 6 in the 2009 ATP Doubles Team Rankings. That match will played last on centre court on Tuesday 9th June 2009.
Hewitt earlier in the day barely broke a sweat withhis 6-1 6-0 first round victory against Eduardo Schwank, the Aussie is seeking his fifth Queens Club title, though his partner in the doubles is surely out to stop him.
Andy’s brother Jamie Murray and Jonathan Erlich will take on Leos Fridl and David Skoch in their first round match. That match will played last on court 1 on Tuesday 9th June 2009.
Other British interests in doubles at Queens Club sees Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski take on Romanian duo Andrei Pavel and Horia Tecau and another Aussi-Brit combo Stephen Huss & Ross Hutchins are awaiting their 2nd round opponents after a bye in the first.
