Andy Murray Strolls into Cincinnati Quarters

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Andy Murray cruised in to the Cincinnati Masters quarter finals with a convincing win against Russian Dmitry Tursunov.

The Scot broke the world number 34 four times in all wrapping up the match in quick time 6-3 6-3.

Andy Murray has now beaten Tursunov in all five of their matches, if he loses one more, Murray gets to keep the big Russian, though if Murray doesn’t beat Nadal next time they meet, Nadal owns Murray.

In hot and humid conditions, Murray controlled the match and Tursunov’s hard-hitting ground strokes were no match for the young Scot’s Craft. After the match Murray said,

It’s so hot, unbelievably humid, you get out of breath really quickly so I was happy to come through in two sets, I started to feel the ball better when I broke him early in the second. Against him it’s so important to stay solid because he can produce some huge shots, get on a roll, and I was lucky that I didn’t let him do that today. I changed the pace of the ball well and used the short slice and he didn’t like that very much.

Murray will now face the winner of Carlos Moya or Igor Andreev in the quarter finals tomorrow.

Dmitry Tursunov up next for Murray in Cincinnati

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Andy Murray will be looking to continue his impressive hard court form against Russian Dmitry Tursunov later today when he again takes to court for his third round match in the Cincinnati masters. The match will be secodn on the grand stand court around 2pm local time (7pm UK time)

Murray dispatched American Sam Querrey yesterday in impressive style and will have his sights set firmly on the later stages of this masters after reaching the semi finals of last weeks Toronto masters. Dmitry Tursunov upset 10th seed Richard Gasquet who crumbled in the match after losing a first set tie break, the Russian won 7-6 6-0.

Murray will enter the match in confident mood having won all 4 of the pairs previous matches. They met twice in 2006 first on grass at Nottingham Murray easing to victory 6-4 6-3, then in LA, their only meeting on hard courts, Murray again winning comfortably 6-2 7-5.

They also met once last year, this time on the carpet of the St. Petersburg open, Tursunov this time did manage to take a set of the Scot, though eventually losing 3-6 7-6(2) 6-4.

Then to complete the set of wins against Dmitry Tursunov on all surfaces, Murray beat the Russian on the red clay of Hamburg earlier this year 6-4 6-1. An impressive win considering its Murray’s least favorite surface.

With Murray’s impressive recent form he is once again odds on favorite with bookmakers.

Andy Murray Eases to Victory Over Sam Querrey

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

us open seriesAndy Murray cruised to victory over big serving American Sam Querrey in his opening match of the Cincinnati Masters.

Murray was playing his first match in Cincinnati after receiving a first round bye and the Scot showed some signs of “ring rust” as he got of to a slow start dropping a break early only to recover and win comfortably 7-6 6-1.

Sam Querrey had most the support behind and he delighted the American crowd early on by breaking Murray on the Brit’s opening service game to take a 3-0 lead. Murray was definitely struggling with a sluggish start but he began to find his serve with 2 aces securing his next service game from a tricky 30 all position.

6 foot 6 inches Querrey is one of the biggest servers on tour and had served 39 service winners which included 20 aces against Paul-Henri Mathieu in the first round. Murray though is no slouch on return and waited foe his chance on the home favorites serve. That chance came in the 7th game as Murray raced to to a 0-40 on Querrey’s serve. He needed two chances to get the break back, but the score was soon level at 4-4 and the match headed on course for a tie break.

Andy started the breaker well obtaining an immediate mini break and holding his two serves to take a 3-0 lead. He added another mini break to take a 4-1 advantage, before dropping one back to Querrey and the score was 5-2. Querrey though could not produce the serves he managed yesterday and lost another point on serve and Murray carved three set points. He only needed one.

The second set was cruise control for Murray and he raced to a 4-0 lead with new comfortable service breaks. He did drop his serve to Querrey, but the Scot broke again to win the set 6-1.

Although Murray was broken twice in this short match, he managed to serve 11 aces compared with 7 form Querrey, which is decent going considering Querrey service stats in his first round match on Monday.

I was feeling pretty uncomfortable on the court to start with. It is so fast here compared to last week and I was struggling to control the ball early on and getting a bit frustrated. But when I calmed down and played a few more games I started to play better and won comfortably in the end.

Murray will now face Richard Gasquet or Dmitry Tursunov in the third round tomorrow. Gasquet and Tursunov will play later on today, around 5pm local time (10pm UK time).

Andy to take on Sam Querrey in Cinicinati Opener

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

us open seriesAndy Murray will begin his Cincinnati Masters challenge in his second round match with big serving American Sam Querrey.

Querrey is currently ranked 46 in the world, though is sitting at 36 in the ATP race, so is on the way up. The 20-year old from San Francisco is amongst a number of young Americans who have yet to live up to the expectations of the American fans, who are desperately seeking another potential grand slam winner.

Sam Querrey American tennis PlayerThe 6′6” American plays well on home soil, he made the semi finals in Indianapolis 2 weeks ago losing to eventual winner Giles Simon and his only title came in Las Vegas in March of this year. Querrey has also posted wins against Richard Gasquet and Nicolas Kiefer so far this year.

Murray and Querrey have met once before way back in 2006 in Newport, Rhode Island where a 19 year old Murray beat an 18 year old Querrey 7-5 6-2.

Andy Murray will be looking to go one step further than the semi finals of this masters event. The Scot has now reached four master semi finals, in 2007 he reached back to back semi finals in Miami and Indian Wells losing to Novak Djokovic on both occasions and he has reached the semis at the Toronto masters event, the Rogers cup twice, he lost to Ricahrd Gasquet in 2006 and last week to Rafael Nadal.

The bookmakers have Murray as odds on favorite to win. As usual betfair has the best overall odds and are still offering their free £25 to new sign ups. Though betfair are favouring Andy Murray to win, whilst Ladbrokes are offering the highest odds for a Andy Murray win,
