Murray beats Bjorkman

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Andy Murray US Open 2007Andy Murray came through a tough second round match against Jonas Bjorkman today, beating the Swede in a five set epic to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

After a close first set which Bjorkman edged, control of the match ebbed and flowed with Murray bouncing straight back to take the next two sets.  By this point Murray seemed to be in control of the match, however a number of outbursts aimed at the umpire appeared to unsettle the young Scot.  Bjorkman was able to capitalise on Murrays frustration to take the fourth set.  However in the fifth set, Murray managed to regain his composure immediately by breaking the Swede in the first game and running out 6-1.

The pivotal game was the fifth in the fifth set.  At 3-1 to Murray, with Bjorkman serving at 40-15, Murray clawed back to deuce and eventually broke the Swede for the second time in the set.  After this point, Andy barely put a foot wrong, and didn’t drop a game to finish the set 6-1.

This is the first time since injuring his wrist back in Hamburg in May, that Andy has managed to string two victories together.  After watching his two US Open matches, it looks like Andy is back to his old self; today especially, showing a vast array of amazing shots.  In the run up to the US Open, the shot that was missing was his massive forehand.  Today we saw it return as at times, he just hit winners for fun!

Andy Murray will face world number 43, Hyung-Taik Lee, the unseeded Korean in the third round.

Henman trounces Tursunov to earn second round spot

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Tim Henman shocked his vast number of critics yesterday by defeating 27th seed and world number 27 Dmitry Tursunov in his first round US Open match.

Henman did well defending against the Russian; Tursunov is one of the ATPs hardest hitters, has a 5-1 win record against Henman and has never lost in the first round of the US Open.  Until yesterday.  Henman fought through the match, continually playing up at the net and despite his aging and aching back he eventually outplayed Tursunov in four sets to win a place in the second round.  The score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The former world number four will retire at the end of September after Britain’s Davis Cup tie against Croatia at Wimbledon.  Speaking after his US Open match, Henman said:

“The whole nature of the match, not only the level of play but the support, the atmosphere out on a big court, was fantastic… I appreciate the situation, this being my last tournament.”

Henman will face Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsgonga in his second round match.

Out with the old and in with the new?

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Today, in the second round of the US Open, Andy will face one of the ATPs veterans, Jonas Bjorkman, who reached the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 1997 and is 15 years older than Andy.  They have never met in a match before.

Jonas Bjorkman

In his first round match against 20 year old Pablo Cuevas, Andy quickly trounced the Uruguayan in straight sets.  However Bjorkman will prove to be tougher than the young qualifier.  Bjorkman has been around for a long time in the professional circuit, and has a lot of experience.  He is likely to have a pretty good game plan, and Andy will have to play well to get to round 3.

However Bjorkman isn’t too bad an opponent for Andy to have; Andy’s forehand is still not back to its good old whopping self and it’s only his fourth match back after a long time out.  But Bjorkman isn’t one of those hard baseline hitters, which means that Andy wont need to worry about getting overpowered.

Andys grumpy demeanor seems to have gone, or at least it did in his match against Cuevas.  His sessions with Roberto Forzoni, his sports psychologist, appear to have helped him enjoy tennis more, and have brought out a positive and refreshed Andy Murray.

I’m sure Brad Gilbert has thought up a good strategy for this match against Bjorkman, but I think Andy’s back on form now anyway…
